WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. โ€” April 30, 2025 โ€” A tranquil spring afternoon turned chaotic on Wednesday after gunfire rang out at Summerfield Park in West Sacramento, resulting in at least one person being injured. The incident occurred shortly before 3:00 p.m., alarming local residents and prompting an immediate response from West Sacramento Police Department (WSPD) officers and emergency medical services.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots near the central playground area of the park, which is a popular spot for families and children, especially on sunny days like today. Panic quickly ensued as parkgoers scrambled for cover and rushed to leave the area.

According to preliminary information from the WSPD, officers arrived on the scene within minutes of receiving multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered one individual suffering from what appeared to be a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of family, was treated on-site by paramedics and later transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

โ€œWe are thankful that the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, but this kind of violence in a public space is deeply concerning,โ€ said WSPD spokesperson Lt. Rachel Hernandez during a press briefing held at the scene. โ€œOur officers are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and we urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.โ€

At this time, authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random, and no arrests have been made. Investigators have cordoned off a large section of the park, particularly around the basketball courts and picnic area, as they comb the area for evidence. Officers were seen speaking with witnesses and collecting surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses.

Parents who were at the park with their children described the event as terrifying. โ€œOne minute the kids were playing, and the next there were loud pops,โ€ said Maria Sanchez, a local mother who was at the park with her two children. โ€œWe just ran. I didnโ€™t even know where the shots were coming from.โ€

This incident has rattled the community, which typically considers Summerfield Park a safe and welcoming place. City officials have promised increased patrols in the area over the coming days to reassure the public and help restore a sense of security.

Mayor Martha Guerrero also issued a statement late Wednesday, expressing her concern and calling for calm. โ€œWe are deeply troubled by todayโ€™s violence at Summerfield Park. Our thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable and that our community remains safe.โ€

The WSPD is asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact their tip line at (916) 617-4900. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via the West Sacramento Police Departmentโ€™s website.

As the investigation continues, residents are advised to avoid the area around Summerfield Park and to remain vigilant. Authorities have not provided an estimated time for when the park will fully reopen to the public.

This developing story will be updated as more details become available.
